Newcastle steel workers set to lose jobs

The Australian Manufacturing and Workers Union (AMWU) says Smorgon Steel will announce the job losses at its Mayfield site. It comes after the company merged with OneSteel 12 months ago. "There have been rumours for months that this merger would mean significant job losses in the industry," AMWU official Steve Murphy said.
"There is no doubt that job losses of this magnitude will directly affect the entire manufacturing and construction industry."
Mr Murphy said the federal government needed to step in immediately to provide support to workers and their families who will lose their incomes.
